Acclaimed Chinese director Zhang Yimou, the same man who created the spectacle at the Opening Ceremony for the 2008 Beijing Olympics, is one of the worldwide greats whose films and career have continued to evolve and remain relevant. “To Live” is a heart-wrenching story of a family financially devastated by the Communist Revolution in China and the father’s appetite for gambling. There’s no real Hollywood ending. You leave watching the film with a greater appreciation of the simple things, and for me had a very profound effect at the time.
