This trailer looks like the real deal. Hope it doesn’t disappoint. I grew up in LA during the 80’s and 90’s, and it was truly a fucked up place. Extremely smoggy (on China levels), gang ridden, just one big wasteland (except for the certain pockets like Beverly Hills, Pacific Palisades, Brentwood, and Malibu. Even Santa Monica was hood back then. Before my parents uprooted us to the Palisades in ’91, we lived all over the box (the grid within the 101, 110, 10 and 405) – from Ktown to Hancock Park. We even got burglarized gunpoint in ’85, in our tiny condo in Los Feliz (now a highly sought after adult hipster enclave) in a small condo by 2 dudes in Fila jumpsuits and jhericurl, and a woman who looked exactly like Rick James, who threatened my life with a steak knife because I couldn’t stop crying. LA was nowhere near the sanitized LA it is today, but I guess you can say the same for most cities who survived the chaos of the Reagan Era. Hopefully “Straight Outta Compton” truly captures the danger most Angelenos felt every day leaving their house, as well as the tidal wave NWA brought to the world. Legendary Pictures is behind it, so my guess it will deliver.
